For those who follow the site, I used Billy Blast Mesh heads in the Alesis DM10 Pad Upgrade Video! The video was posted January 12th, however I had been using the Billy Blast Mesh heads since the second week of December.
The mesh heads that I purchased did not have the Condura Nylon Patch. My first impression of the heads were good. They are a great price, they have a great feel (as far as rebound), and they have not stretched very much.
As of today (2/23/10) I had my first Billy Blast Mesh head fail. It was a 10″ model used on my snare trigger pad. The coating over the mesh head was looking noticeably worn about a month ago. only the snare has failed however the other drums are showing signs of wear. It is also important to note that I use 5A nylon tip sticks and I can hit rather hard from time to time.
Conclusion:
As far as the budget level mesh heads go, I feel that the Billy Blast is one of the better mesh heads. I got about 9 weeks of heavy use out of it. Most mesh heads I’ve used in this price range normally only get me about 4 weeks of use before it fails. If you are a light to moderate hitter, I think these should last a little longer. At $10 for a 10 inch drum I would like to see a little more life, but the feel was very good. I purchased my heads without the nylon patch. I would recommend that if you decide to purchase these heads, please get them with the nylon patch. I’m sure they will last a lot longer with it.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI wonder if the patch will affect the bounce because I agree they rebound nicely.
How many weeks of playing time do you get from non-budget mesh heads like Roland, Hart Magnums or Pintech?
I have never used the Pintech. The Hart Magnums I had lasted about 2 years before failure. Out of all of them the best is the Roland heads. I’ve owned five Roland heads since 2002. Only one has broke. They other four I sold with the drum triggers they were on. I have been told that they have a few very small holes but are still being use. I hope that helps.
Billy has some new heads out now that are much stronger. These are made with ne materials

I’m already working on a review of the new heads. I got a 12″ Ballistech II mesh head two days ago. It will be about four weeks of testing before I do the write up, so keep an eye out for it.
I was just about to ask if you have already reviewed the Ballistech II heads.
I just ordered a DM10 Studio kit and expecting it soon. I’m gonna go ahead and order Billy’s new mesh heads though.
Just to confirm, The DM10’s kick drum is a 10″ head as well?
I just got the Ballistech II mesh head last week and put it on a drum this past weekend. I will not have a total review until after I used it for about a month. The heads just started shipping last week, so they are that new. I can tell you that my first impressions of the head (i.e. quality and feel) are pretty good. For being 3 ply, I expected to feel a little heavier, but I would say it isn’t any heavier than a Roland mesh head. Only with testing will I be able to comment further. I hope that helps.
No, Kick drum size is 8″ head. I hope that helps.
